Domestic violence is a traumatic experience that changes a person’s life forever. The coercion and control can have far reaching consequences, including having a significant impact on behavioral health through mental health and substance use coercion. And when relationships become physically violence, violence is often directed at the head, neck and face—through blows to the head or strangulation that can cause brain injuries. The traumatic, personal cause of this brain injury causes significant psychological and neurological trauma.

Although the prevalence of brain injury among unhoused populations has been relatively established, there is recent focus on the occurrence of brain injury for those who are facing housing insecurity, and how brain injury impacts a person's trajectory into homelessness.

This webinar will discuss general principles of medication management of neuropsychiatric symptoms after brain injury, explain which medication classes should be avoided (or used with caution) in individuals with brain injury, describe pharmacologic strategies for managing mood and behavioral disturbances in individuals with brain injury, and describe pharmacologic strategies for supporting cognitive function in individuals with brain injury.

Having 1 or more brain injuries with loss of consciousness is associated with greater risk of BH problems, including problematic substance use beginning in adolescents, more psychiatric symptoms, and a significantly elevated risk of suicide. (TBI and Substance Use Disorders, 2021, attcnetwork.org). Not only does brain injury cause behavioral health problems, but associated challenges can also affect the effectiveness of behavioral health treatments. Identifying and supporting those with brain Injury can lead to more successful outcomes.
