Suicide is a difficult topic and may feel uncomfortable to talk about at first, but talking about suicide saves lives.
We can help you know what to say and what to do.
Approach the topic gently by asking how they are doing. Talk about any concerning behaviors you've noticed.
Do
- Take them seriously
- Ask them clearly and directly if they are thinking of suicide
- Ask questions and offer words of encouragement
- Be supportive and listen with your full attention
- Connect them to help, such as Your Life Iowa
Don't
- Brush off their feelings
- Ask indirectly by saying things like “Are you thinking about hurting yourself?” or “You're not thinking of doing something silly are you?”
- Promise to keep it a secret
- Leave them alone
- Assume someone else will reach out
