Practicing Cultural Humility with Children & Families in Crisis

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services is hosting a free webinar training series to assist Iowa’s 988 and behavioral health crisis providers in serving children and their families, and individuals who identify as LGBTQ+.  While this webinar was developed for crisis service providers it is open to everyone.  This training will be recorded for on-demand viewing.

Presentation by Diamond Denney, LMSW, Iowa HHS Office of Health Equity, Laticia Aossey, Achieving Maximum Potential, & Andrea Dencklau, MSW, ACEs360

Description: For public health and human service practitioners, cultural humility is a framework for collegial and community relationships that support the goals of health equity and mutual respect. This interactive training will present the concept of cultural humility and its relationship to cultural competency. Participants will learn how to challenge their own unique set of biases and privileges that impact children and families in crisis, and clients they work with. Participants will consider the three tenets of cultural humility and how they apply to one’s personal development and professional practice as, together, we move the needle to achieve health equity for all people living in Iowa.

Training Objectives:

  1. Define cultural humility as it relates to public health and human services practice.
  2. Describe the three tenets of cultural humility.
  3. Identify what families in crisis need from us (brain science and crisis).
  4. Identify best practices when providing services to youth and families.
  5. Commit to one action to improve your practice using cultural humility.

Please note this training is capped at 35 participants.

Certificates of attendance will be offered for each training following completion of a survey.  Training information and resources can also be found on the Iowa HHS website.
