National Drug Take Back Day is April 26

Published April 10, 2025

Mark your calendar for DEA National Drug Takeback Day on Saturday, April 26, 2025. This day is a chance to get rid of old or unused medications in a safe way. Keeping unused drugs at home can be dangerous. This event helps protect your family and community.

Old medications left in your house can be dangerous in several ways, including:

  • Accidental consumption by a child or pet. This can lead to physical harm or an overdose death.
  • Misuse by others, leading to addition or harm.
  • Harm to the environment if the medications end up in the trash or flushed down the toilet.

On Drug Takeback Day, you can take your unwanted medications to a drop-off location near you. It’s free, anonymous, and easy! Most sites accept pills, patches, and even liquid medicines. But they don’t take needles, inhalers, or illegal drugs.

Getting rid of unused medication is a small step that makes a big difference. It helps keep dangerous substances out of the wrong hands. It also helps to protect our water and soil from pollution.

To find a drop-off site near you, visit the DEA website or check with your local police department. Questions or concerns about drug use? Your Life Iowa is here to support you or a loved one. Call, text or chat with us. It’s free and confidential.
