March is Brain Injury Awareness Month

Published March 1, 2025

In the United States, millions of people experience brain injuries every year. At Your Life Iowa, we are here to support you or a loved one living with a brain injury. Learn more about our resources here.

Traumatic brain injuries can be caused by an external force. This can include hitting your head during a fall or car crash. Concussions are a type of traumatic brain injury.

An injury to the brain that is not caused by an external force is considered a non-traumatic brain injury. Non-traumatic brain injuries can result from an illness, lack of oxygen, or stroke.

Brain injuries often occur alongside other concerns. Like mental health, substance use, criminal or juvenile justice involvement and homelessness. Screening for brain injury is important to help support treatment and recovery.

People with brain injuries might struggle with memory, balance or emotions. They may need time, therapy and understanding to heal. Family and friends play a big role in helping someone recover and feel supported.

This month, take time to learn more about brain injuries and steps to protect your brain.

If you or someone you know has a brain injury, know that help is available. You can find resources and support through the Brain Injury Association of America.
