  • Identity-based shame.
  • Substance use.
  • Homelessness.

Protective factors for LGTQ youth and young adults include:

  • Acceptance by family of origin. This includes parents, siblings, grandparents and children.
  • Supportive social network made up of LGBTQ friends, allies, and family.
  • Access to and use of medical and mental health care.
