Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition. It often occurs after experiencing or seeing a scary, shocking, or dangerous event. These events could include accidents, natural disasters, war or abuse. Approximately 12 million adults in the U.S. experience PTSD each year (1).
June is PTSD Awareness Month. We invite you to take time to learn about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its impacts. At Your Life Iowa, our counselors are available 24/7 to answer questions or provide support for PTSD.
People with PTSD may have flashbacks, bad dreams or feel like they are reliving the event. They might also avoid places, people, or situations that remind them of what happened.
Other symptoms include (2):
- Feeling on edge
- Trouble sleeping
- Feeling angry or upset for no identifiable reason
PTSD can affect anyone, no matter their age or background. It is not a sign of weakness. It’s a normal response to an extreme situation. The good news is that help is available.
