The Christmas season is a time for celebration, family and fun. But for some, the holidays can also bring stress, sadness and challenges with alcohol use. It’s important to take care of your mental health during this busy time of year. That includes being mindful of how much alcohol you drink.

Why Some People Drink More During Christmas

Christmas parties, family dinners, and get-togethers often include alcohol. Some people might feel like drinking helps them relax or enjoy the celebration more. Others might turn to alcohol relieve anxiousness, sadness or stress during the holidays.

  • Find other ways to relax: Instead of reaching for a drink, try other ways to unwind. This could be things like watching a favorite tv show, walking on a treadmill or talking to a friend. These activities can help you feel better without the risks that come with alcohol.
  • Stay connected: If you’re feeling lonely or sad, reach out to friends or family members. Talking to someone you trust can help you feel more supported.
  • Take care of your body: When you take care of your body, you’re also taking care of your mind. Get enough sleep and stay active. It's also important to eat healthy.
  • Ask for help if you need it: If you’re struggling with your mental health or feel like you’re drinking too much, it’s okay to ask for help. Talking to a therapist or counselor can help you find better ways to cope with stress and sadness.
