Iowa HHS Problem Gambling Webinar SeriesSession Description

This training provides mental health professionals with essential tools and knowledge to address financial management issues encountered by clients, especially those affected by problem gambling. Led by Dr. Axton Betz-Hamilton, AFC® of GamFin and Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, the session covers common financial management issues, securing finances and protecting assets and accounts from problem gambling. The presenter will share proven strategies to reduce overall financial harm experienced by people impacted by someone’s gambling disorder.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the impact: recognize the emotional, financial, and psychological effects of gambling addiction on families and loved ones.
  • Identify warning signs: learn how to identify signs of problem gambling in a family member.
  • Implement financial strategies: learn practical financial strategies to protect and manage family finances when a loved one is dealing with gambling addiction.
  • Explore support systems: discover the range of support networks, counseling options, and resources available for families affected by gambling addiction.
  • Learn preventive measures: explore solutions and preventive measures that can reduce the risk of financial harm to families.

Axton Betz-Hamilton, a financial counselor and educator, holds a PhD in Human Development & Family Studies, an MS in Personal Financial Planning, and a Graduate Certificate in Financial Therapy.

Axton Betz-Hamilton understands the emotional toll of debt and financial trauma through personal experience. Today she helps others who are experiencing financial distress caused by addiction.
