PRIORITY for this course will be given to professionals currently working
in the Substance Abuse Prevention field that require this
course for certification requirements.
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), in collaboration with Midwest Counterdrug Training Center (MCTC), is offering the national CAPT version of Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training (SAPST). The curriculum has the most current information available on evidence-based prevention practices and programs. SAPST will enable participants and agencies to gain the ability to enhance their efforts and design prevention programs that create real, long term results.
This tuition-free training has three parts: a 5-hour online course (pre-requisite), entitled Introduction to Substance Abuse Prevention: Understanding the Basics, followed by two separate 2-day resident training sessions. Phase 1 requirements include completing the online training and the 1st 2-day distance learning virtual training session. Participants that complete Phase 1 will be auto-enrolled into Phase 2 for the remaining 2-day resident block. **Participants must be able to complete all 3 parts**
What is the Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training (SAPST)?
- Foundational course of study in substance abuse prevention
- Innovative training that blends two 2-day virtual components with an interactive online unit
- For Iowa’s entry-level prevention practitioners and professionals working in related fields
- Grounded in current research and SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF)
- Provides knowledge and skills to implement effective, data-driven prevention programs, practices, and policies that reduce behavioral health disparities and improve wellness
Are continuing education hours available?
- The IC&RC Prevention Committee has endorsed SAPST as an IC&RC-approved curriculum. This endorsement ensures that SAPST is applicable to IC&RC’s prevention specialist domains and can be used toward the IC&RC’s Prevention Specialist credential requirements.
- SAPST has also been approved by NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals.
- Participants completing SAPST will receive a certificate for 31 hours of training. Certificates can be submitted to credentialing authority toward certification or re-certification.

FAQ's
Who is the intended audience?
Substance Abuse Prevention Specialists, public health professionals, educators, coalition leaders, and professionals working in related fields.
* Participants wanting to utilize the SAPST course to meet the Iowa Board of Certification requirements for Prevention Specialist Certification must attend all 4 days of resident training and complete the online prerequisite.
PRIORITY for this course will be given to professionals currently working in the substance abuse prevention field and need the course for Prevention Specialist certification requirements.
What are the pre-requisite requirements?
Participants will receive the online pre-requisite course details via email one month before the first two-day training is scheduled to start.
When is Phase 2?
All students who complete this Phase 1 training will automatically be enrolled in the Phase 2 course: July 14-15, 2021.
How often is the SAPST offered in Iowa?
This course is offered two times per year, once in the fall and once in the spring. The course dates are set 3-6 months before the training occurs and once confirmed, are posted on the MCTC website.
