IDPH: Substance Abuse Prevention Ethics for Re-Certification
Location: Distance Learning
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), in collaboration with Midwest Counterdrug Training Center (MCTC), is offering Prevention Ethics for Recertification. The training was created by the Iowa Department of Public Health.
Prevention Ethics for Recertification Training is primarily for experienced prevention practitioners working in communities, but it is also appropriate for professionals working in related fields.
What does the Prevention Ethics for Recertification training cover?
Certified Prevention Specialists in Iowa adhere to the Prevention Think Tank Code of Ethics. This set of principals "expresses prevention professionals’ recognition of responsibilities to the public, to service recipients, and to colleagues within and outside of the prevention field. They guide prevention professionals in the performance of their professional responsibilities and express the basic tenets of ethical and professional conduct." Unfortunately, the practice of ethical decision making is not always clear cut especially for experienced prevention professionals and prevention supervisors. Therefore, it is important to continually enhance preventionists' skills in identifying ethical dilemmas and applying a framework for ethical decision making. As a result of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the six principals that make up Iowa's Code of Ethics for Prevention
- Apply a framework for ethical decision making
- Recognize potential ethical dilemmas that experienced preventionists' and prevention supervisors may face
- Apply a framework for ethical decision making to ethical dilemmas to determine a course of action
Are continuing education hours available?
Participants completing the Prevention Ethics training will receive a certificate for three hours of training. Certificates can be submitted to credentialing authority toward certification or recertification. This training meets the Ethics training requirement for Prevention Specialist Recertification through the Iowa Board of Certification.
How often is the Prevention Ethics for Certification course offered in Iowa?
This course is offered two-three times per year. Additional trainings may be added to the yearly schedule depending on training need. The course dates are set 3-6 months before the training occurs and once confirmed, are posted on the MCTC website.
