Objective:
According to the CDC (CDC, 2020) suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. This issue disproportionately impacts individuals living with problem gambling. While studies indicate 1 in 5, or 20%, will attempt suicide, far more are living with suicide ideation.
In this session participants will discuss the correlation between problem gambling and suicide, why these societal impacts should be discussed together and the underlying causes for the correlation. Additionally, attendees will learn how to integrate problem gambling and suicide prevention into current prevention programming and how to integrate these important and connected issues through education, awareness and advocacy.
Participants will be able to:
- Explain the correlation between problem gambling and suicide
- Identify opportunities to infuse information regarding problem gambling and its relation to suicide in current programming
- Have strategies to address the issues of problem gambling and suicide in their communities and organizations.
The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HHS) is pleased to offer additional problem gambling prevention webinars in the Spring of 2023.
Iowa HHS prevention contractors are not required to attend but participation is encouraged.
