Building Prevention Capacity Through Professional Development

This training is designed for substance use and problem gambling prevention staff and supervisors, coalition leaders and members, and others interested in prevention in Iowa.

CEUs have been applied  for with the Iowa Board of Certification

This webinar will center on building the capacity to provide effective prevention services that reach intended outcomes in the communities we serve by focusing on the continued professionalization of the prevention field.

Together we will explore:

  • Our “why” for doing this work
  • The professionalization of the prevention field
  • The Prevention Core Competencies (published by SAMHSA in May of 2021 https://store.samhsa.gov/product/Prevention-Core-Competencies/PEP20-03-08-001) including:
    • Background and definition of key terms
    • The cross cutting competencies (interdisciplinary foundations, multiple systems, family dynamics, ethical practice, basic knowledge and communication)
    • The five domains (assessment, capacity building, planning, implementation and evaluation)
  • The importance of certification and ongoing professional development

This webinar will include a variety of tools, resources and activities, including discussion and opportunities for self- reflection.
