“Leveling Up” in How We Understand & Address the Convergence of Youth Gaming & Gambling

We have seen the convergence of video gaming and gambling for some time now, notably with things like loot boxes and social casino games. What is the latest research on convergence and trends, including the influence of COVID-19?   In this session, we will cover ground on key things you need to know, commonalities and differences between gaming and gambling disorder, and what we can do to help address –and leverage -- these increasingly important issues from prevention to treatment.

1-800-BETS OFF: Be #1 at Getting Help

This session will take participants through the qualitative research used to create the current 1-800-BETS OFF campaign, and how to best use the materials to assist prevention, treatment, and responsible gaming efforts.

Objectives:

  • Learn about the steps in the qualitative research process
  • Learn how the research impacted campaign design
  • Understand how to utilize and leverage key messaging.

Gambling: Community Outreach - Part 2

This session will continue the process of client find and where disordered gamblers are more likely to congregate and where they are likely to go to seek help.

Objectives:

  • Participants will develop an outreach plan based of where those experiencing gambling problems seek initial help and begin to develop relationships with those potential referral agents.
  • Participants will receive hands on help in developing their plans.

Gambling: Criminal Justice

This session will introduce the need for a relationship with the justice system to help in diagnosing and treating disordered gambling clients.

Objectives:

  • Participants will understand the prevalence of disordered gamblers in the judicial system and their most likely entrance points into the justice system.
  • Participants will be given the 5 “R’s” of reporting to the justice system on the recovery progress of disordered gambling clients.

Gambling: Family Dynamics – Part 1

This session will introduce the family role in recovery and the diagnostics used to help family members understand their role in addiction.

Objectives:

  • Participants will begin to understand the similarities and differences in co-dependency between SUD and Gambling Disorder.
  • Participants will be introduced to the integration of family into gambling disorder recovery process.

Gambling: Finances – Part 4

This session covers the counselor’s ongoing role in maintaining the budgeting process to insure “pressure relief” and the ability to continue in the recovery process.

Objectives:

  • Participants will be given the tools for ongoing revisiting of the prepared budget
  • Participants will be given the tools to “fix” the budget should relapse or unexpected expenses happen.
