BULLYING SUPPORT

There are many different types of bullying and many reasons that bullies may engage in the behaviors they do. Below is information on the various types of bullying.

Types of Bullying

  • Physical: can include posturing, hands on victim or victims belongings moved or damaged
  • Verbal: negative or derogatory comments, made either directly or indirectly
  • Psychological: social and emotional (exclusion, manipulation, gossip)
  • Sexual: (this often increases during the middle school and high school years)- pulling clothes, lifting up skirts, exposing body parts to victim, touching or grabbing parts of body, asking intimate, sexual questions

Cyber: “Cyber-bullying is the use of modern communication technologies to embarrass, humiliate, threaten, or intimidate an individual in the attempt to gain power and control over them.” Glenn R. Stutzky

  • One study found that victims of cyber bullying had higher levels of depression than victims of face-to-face bullying (Wang, Nansel et al., 2010)

Cyber bullying can take many forms:

  • Sending mean messages or threats to a person's email account or cell phone
  • Spreading rumors online or through texts
  • Posting hurtful or threatening messages on social networking sites or web pages
  • Stealing a person's account information to break into their account and send damaging messages
  • Pretending to be someone else online to hurt another person
  • Taking unflattering pictures of a person and spreading them through cell phones or the Internet
  • Sexting, or circulating sexually suggestive pictures or messages about a person
